Turning a House into a Million Dollar Home

Any house can be turned into a home, whether it has humble square footage or luxuriously appointed grounds. A tiny Cape Cod house on the coast or a grand Italianate mansion in a secluded and exclusive housing estate offer equal chances of becoming your favorite place to be. Surrounding yourself with people and things you love goes a long way to turning your structure into a welcoming abode. Here are some ways you can create your own million dollar home on any budget and in any house.

Color

Humans react very strongly to color. Certain colors evoke certain emotions in people based on memories and experiences as well as the psychology of color (how color tends to affect us in general). Paint is also one of the most quick and easy ways to add color to your home, so you can get the effect you want fairly painlessly. Determine your favorite colors and then plan out an overall color scheme for you walls that will complement the colors you select in your soft and hard furnishings. When you walk into a room and feel happiest when cocooned by earth tones, energized by vibrant reds and oranges, or soothed by blues, you will truly feel at home.

Quality

Whatever your budget, choose the best quality you can afford in furniture and textiles. High-quality materials and construction in furniture, upholstery, draperies, bedding, and storage items mean that these articles are far more likely to last longer and look good. You’ll get more for your money, in other words. But be sure to choose items that please your eye and appeal to your sense of style and personality. Your home could be a showcase of important pieces that cause art and antique dealers to drool openly, but unless you love living amongst your possessions, your house won’t really be a home. Some professional decorators encourage home owners to live in an empty house for a while until they know exactly how they want it to look, and then make careful and studied quality purchases as resources and time allow.

Private Spaces

We tend to focus on public spaces first, but it might be better to allocate resources to turning your private spaces into havens of safety and seclusion. As you spend approximately one-third of your life sleeping, your bedroom should be an oasis of rest. Again, color and quality come into play here, but so does finding the absolute best mattress for your body. When you can lie down comfortably at night and wake up in the morning feeling refreshed, your life will seem less stressful and far more enjoyable. It’s never a waste to spend the resources on your private spaces, as this focus can quickly turn your house into your own million dollar home.
